Rainbow Twins First Birthday Party

Double the luck, double the fun, double the rainbows cause our girls just turned one!

A lot of people say that a first birthday party isn’t really for the baby(s), it’s for the grown ups. Fair. Likely very true. But surviving the first year with twin babies is a milestone worth acknowledging! Also who doesn’t love a themed party & any reason to celebrate!

I loved our first birthday theme! I spent a fair amount of time scouring the internet for a theme for our girls first birthday but nothing felt quite right until I came across a twin rainbow birthday cake. The two “smash” cakes looked like clouds and they were connected by a big rainbow. Our girls have March birthdays so the rainbows coordinated perfectly with St. Patrick’s Day and the theme seemed to fit just how lucky we felt to be celebrating not one but two special girls!

Invitations & Games

We opted for evites instead of mailed invitations (because I’m a twin mom with minimal free time). Here’s the template for our invite. It was super easy to download the Canva design and text it to family and friends we wanted to invite.

We played a “Guess Who” game at the party which was pretty challenging for most of our guests. I printed out photos of each girl (by themselves) and placed them in a numbered frame. We asked everyone to guess which twin was in each photo. This was a fun way to encourage the people in our lives to continue to notice and appreciate the differences between our identical girls! We placed a clipboard with this template printed for guests to place a tally mark in the “Mattie” or “Nora” column based on who they thought was in each photo.

Decorations

Definitely the funnest part of party planning for me is planning and executing the decorations. Twin mom hack: start decorating your house a few days in advance (obviously this isn’t possible if the party is not at your house) but juggling food + baby nap schedules is enough to manage on the day of the party without also scrambling to set up decorations.

Our big backdrop was actually pretty simple. We ordered 2 rainbow foil fringe streamer sets and made a simple white balloon arch for the “clouds.” We used these high chair banners and viola we had the perfect rainbow corner for all of the photos!

Next, we bought a rainbow party kit complete with table cloths, paper plates (large and small), napkins, cups and a happy birthday banner. A set of rainbow themed foil balloons (half of which my party assistant AKA my husband popped while trying to inflate) and our basement decoration was complete!

Upstairs, we uploaded an Art Mode screensaver to our Samsung Frame TV using the template found here and completed the upstairs decorations with this cute Daisy Monthly Milestone Photo Banner that fit right in with our rainbow theme.

Attire

I had so much fun coming up with rainbow themed outfits for our entire family for the party. First and foremost, the birthday girls wore matching pink tutu dresses that I customized using my Cricut to add a simple rainbow. I recently joined the Cricut fam and making shirts for our entire family was a fun way to practice using my new toy! I made a “mama” and “big brother” design so we could all celebrate in style!

Food, Drinks & Dessert

We tried to stay on theme with our foods while keeping everything pretty simple.  We opted for fruits (all of the colors of the rainbow), rainbow goldfish, rainbow pasta noodles (regular noodles dyed with food coloring & sauce on the side), garlic bread and crockpot meatballs.  The kids thought the rainbow noodles were fun, but I will say it was tricky keeping them warm and not soggy since the noodles had to be made a few hours in advance to leave time to dye them rainbow colors.

We filled a cooler with various colored gatorades and juice boxes to stay on theme with the rainbow colors.

Grandma made the cutest rainbow cupcakes for everyone to enjoy and the birthday girls were lucky enough to get the most adorable rainbow birthday cake! A talented friend of mine baked the cloud cakes and customized each cake with the girls’ names. Two rainbow cake toppers (+ a larger cricut paper cake topper because oops the ones from Amazon were only 4 inches wide and not large enough to connect the two cakes) and two rainbow 1 candles later and we were finally ready for a cake smash!

We had an incredible day celebrating our special girls with our family and friends. The girls were spoiled with way too many gifts and even got 400 new balls for their rainbow ball pit!

While I’m sure the girls will not remember this special day, I sure will.  Mattie and Nora we are so lucky to love you both!
